Australia’s first commercial space-capable rocket blasted off from Koonibba’s test range on Saturday 19 September 2020, by Adelaide-based Southern Launch. Two dart fired rockets were successfully launched (after a failed attempt a few days earlier), to the excitement of an audience of more than 100 people. This historic event, titled ‘Australia’s First Launch from Australia’s First People’, marks an exciting new era for locals, business and visitors in the area, with new jobs, investment and viewing opportunities on the horizon with the test range now officially established. The range boasts over 10,000 square kilometres of area, and extends out 145 kilometers over uninhabited national park, providing companies with the ability to recover their rocket and payload and do further testing and systems validation before launching into orbit from another of Southern Launch’s facilities.
